St. Joseph Cathedral, the cathedral church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, had a humble beginning 1925 as a basement church on the corner of Jasper Avenue and 113th Street. Parishioners worshipped there for decades, until the superstructure was finally completed in 1963. This footage originated as part of CFRN-TV’s Eye On Edmonton program, narrated by George Kidd. It highlights the consecration ceremony for the new building, held on May 1, 1963, the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. The presider was Archbishop Anthony Jordan, who shepherded the Archdiocese from 1963 to 1974. The cathedral is now known as St. Joseph Basilica, a designation made in recognition of the missionaries and pioneers who built the Catholic faith in the Edmonton area.
